Meet the VVSEAI Team: Benedict Tan

We're excited to kick start our "𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 VVSEAI 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺" series to introduce the wonderful, multi-faceted talent we have in the Vertex Ventures SEA & India! This month of May, we feature Benedict Tan, based in Singapore.

1. What did you do before Vertex and what did you study?

Back in Singapore Management University, I majored in Finance as I knew from the beginning that I would want to work in this field. I joined Vertex straight out of college back in 2020; I didn’t have a slightest clue about VC (apart from online literatures) and didn’t have any prior experience in VC. To this day, I am still thankful for Vertex’s trust and how they coached / mentored me from Day 1. (Read Benedict's First Year in VC in The Business Times)

2. What is one thing you most enjoy about working at Vertex?

Definitely speaking to founders - feeling the passion, hunger from what they first started out with to energy and drive to bring the business to forward is very gratifying for me. Founders are just a different breed of super humans - resilient to challenges and super creative to problem solve!

3. Tell us something we didn't know that you do outside of work?

My current happy pill is playing badminton, an activity which I do on a weekly basis. It helps me stay fit and also provide a refreshing break from work demands. I just started Badminton around a year ago and I would classify myself as still pretty bad at it. Feel free to reach out and we can smash some shuttles together!
