This column was first published by the Times Of India.
Recently, Sonam Motwani, the Founder and CEO of Karkhana.io, our portfolio company in India, recently shared the transformative potential of sustainable practices in the Indian manufacturing sector with The Times Of India, India’s largest English newspaper by circulation. Karkhana is a tech-enabled B2B platform providing end-to-end custom manufacturing solutions digitising manufacturing across India.
In her article, "Green and Clean Technology: The Future of Indian Manufacturing”, Sonam highlights the following:
- The manufacturing sector plays a key role in driving economic growth and development in India. However, for India to achieve its aspirations of becoming a $10 trillion economy, more emphasis needs to be given to the manufacturing sector and seeing it as a key lever. 📈
- However, the manufacturing sector is energy-intensive and a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to nearly 40% of the country's total energy consumption as many of the factories currently rely on diesel generators.
- For India to grow in a sustainable way, factories need to pivot to renewable energy sources such as solar. The challenge is that solar requires a lot of costly imported materials so a robust solar supply chain needs to be created domestically. This may be a good long-term move for India, scaling up the adoption of clean energy and creating new meaningful jobs.
